Dimethyl Isosorbide Questions

I have a few questions about Dimethyl Isosorbide that I am hoping to get some help with.

1) Does anyone know if it safe to use in products that may be used around the eye area?

(I have done my own research about the safety of this product, but I couldn’t find a lot of info on safety around the eyes.)

2) Is there a minimum concentration needed for efficacy? Could I get away with using a small amount, such as 2%, or would this be ineffectual?

Thanks for your time.

  • Hi MJL,

I had the same question a while ago and also could not find much. I use 1% of Dimethyl Isosorbide in a serum that I have been using for four months. It does not cause any sensitivity (my skin is not sensitive though). The lotioncrafter website recommends the usage of 1 to 10%.

Another reference point, The Ordinary have a product that is to be used under eyes and it includes Dimethyl Isosorbide.

    Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG

I do not think that they use more than 1%. I use the ordinary's ingredient lists a lot for a reference. Keep in mind that Dimethyl Isosorbide decreases viscosity significantly.

    I hope it's helpful.
  • Hi @ngarayeva001. Apologies for the obscenely late reply; for some reason I was not notified of your response to this post. Just wanted to thank you for commenting and for the information you shared. I appreciate it!

Dimethyl Isosorbide functions primarily as a solvent and penetration enhancer.  You can use it in the 1% to 5% range.  Yes, you can use it around the eyes.  Smells horrid, so be aware of that in advance.
